ok so what do i need to set the hdd to? pri ide master im guessing? then set the bios to boot from cd then follow instructions? is that right? yea i dont realy have the problem of the hdd for too long. its just i dnt get paid for another 3weeks so i just want to get it started right now. as soon as i get paid i am goin to but a 200gig ide hdd and a copy of windows xp,i have a copy all ready but i cannot find the box or the product key. it only has 1 use left anyway so im not too bothered. also im gonna buy 1024mb of ram to upgrade this *****.

Poetry, I read somewhere that you will need updated drivers to run XP on that board, but it sounds like you are going with linux so you should be okay.

All, off topic a little...sorry but I played with Red Hat 5-6 years ago, didn't like it.

Can anyone recommend a good linux OS (preferably free)....is feather good?
I've looked around a little but can figure out what to get.

hi normal type, no i believe it should be fine with xp seeing as that was the os that was previously run on it. i have heard from another member on here that feather is a close comparison to windows. the gui is apparently similar. that is the os i am trying to download now.

If you want a full desktop replacement then debian is very good, Feather is a good place to start as well. The good thing about feather is you just boot it as a live cd then when you are at the desktop GUI then just select the option from the menu to install to hdd and its pretty easy.

well the XP made for Dell takes up 8GB, a regular windows XP takes up MAX 4GB.

Also here's a few tip's on the install

Don't forget to pick http install and pick a mirror from a city that is close to you. (and don't be scared to start over if it turns out to be a slow server)


When you are past the general setup options. And you are picking the packages to install with aptget, the mail server "ALWAYS" install's no matter what (don't worry about that) but make sure you select the desktop environment, (alittle screwy but the space bar selects the services you want to install) if you end up booting and there is no Graphical User Interface (GUI) then you didn't get the desktop option line selected.
