NEwb asks "Is xp 64 required for 64bis system?"

I'm looking at putting togher/upgrading at least 2 systems.

I've done some searching and found and lot of great info that updated me since the last (re)build.

I just want to be clear that on this go around that if I get a 64 bit system (which seems to be all there is now) that I don't need xp 64 or whatever it's called.

no, you can use windows xp x86 (32 bit) or even a linux distro, but it will not be able to take advantage of 64bit processing

you might as well get x64 to take advantage of the 64 bit capabilities (linux distros also come in 64bit flavors) (linux = free os)
 
another noob question, by a smart guy...

Does AMD Athlon 64 2800+ mean that the processor is 64-bit?
Because thats what my parents have.
