Well yes, freezing it is only temporary. The point is, is to get the files you want/need off the HDD before it becomes totally inaccessible. Freezing is often a last resort, and usually works.

But freezing the hdd wouldn't end up frying it for good? After you do the trick a couple of times, wouldn't it become totally useless, or can you do the freeze trick infinitely until you get everything out?

I can't say for sure. My uncle has done it a few times with a few different HDD's. He was able to get everything out just fine.

Try plugging it in as a slave drive and transfer files to the master drive. It might not work as hard that way, therefore not heating up as quick.
