I need some suggestions on ways to FILTER/CONTROL the types of websites that are being browsed on a win98 system. The pc is for the kids in the house and i don't want to throw xp into it (i'd have to double the ram to get it to run half decently, and do some other things into it). It's an old pc.

Anyone know of any decent programs that actually work? The pc is also going to be within my network (in my house). We mainly need to keep the pc from viewing porn and xxx sites. Win98 doesn't really supply any worth while programs for the job (i did set up the content rating thingie on IE, but since i've never used it before, i dont know if its gonna be good enough).

If the kids are any way knowledgeable in computers they can bypass it easily. If they arenÂ’t then just use the IE settings. But if a kid wants it there is really no way to stop them. Sorry.

Thanks Microbell, i'll check into those. I also downloaded a couple free trial programs. I'll have to weed 'em out to see which is efficient and worth my time.

There are programs like NetNanny, but the problem with NetNanny is that the adult site needs to be registered with NetNanny in order for it to be effective.

Otherwise, if the computers are on a shared internet contection with with a PC doing the routing, you can get a program called Win Proxy. It a software router program that offer the following :-
* Firewall
* Website / Keyword Black Listing
* Adult Site Blocking
* Job Serch Engine Blocking

Otherwise, I do not that if you have a Hardware Router. Eg. My Netgear DG-814, you can blacklist website and keywords.
Just for the $#!+s and giggles value of it, I blacklisted the word "Transformers" and "Dragon Ball". My flatmate was plenty pissed when he found out what I did.

I'm using an SMC Barricade 8port router. What i've decided to do is get rid of 98 on the pc they'll be using (it has low security). I'm going to install either xp or win2kpro and set up passwords and user accounts. This will stop them from installing anything onto it. I'll then setup the browsers content advisor thing, and see if that helps while i have time to check out software that's worthy.

They're not my kids, they're my gf's kids. They're teens. One of 'em previously ruined a pc (before i was around) by downloading all sorts of porn software and unsigned active x stuff. The pc was a mess with popups, spyware, backdoor programs, and hackers messing with the ports. They're not too bright. lol.
