Windows Media Player 10 Problem

I'm sure my answer is posted somewhere already but can't find it. Video files (mpeg, avi, wmv, asf, etc.) when played are choppy. How do I smooth things out?
Codecs installed:
MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid
Also, DirectX 9.0c

AMD K-6-III 500 MHz 384 Mb SDRAM

Video files played in Windows 98SE with WMP 9 run perfectly.

well you can reinstall it in the add/remove, add/remove windows components or update to version 10
