I am using the hp website to buy a new desktop.
The one I am interested in is D4100Y
Intel Pent D930
3.0GHZ 4MB 800MHZ FSB
with 2GB Memory
250 GB HardDrive
256 MB DDR ATI Graphics

My question is:
Would that computer be alot faster than an Intel Pent III
1000 MHZ with 512 RAM
(which is what I am using now)

Would we notice much difference in speed with the new one?
My grandson plays games on the computer & needs more speed.

Thank You for any advice you all can give me

To answer you question, yes, you would see a huge difference most likely. You could probably get a gaming computer that would be better for your grandson though from a company that pre-builds computers. Unless you'd be up to building it yourself.

What graphics card does it come with, as I can guarentee it will not play games to the standards your grandson was expecting.

How about building one with your grandson as a project? If not, look around at local computer stores, see if they will build one for you.

(If he is around 8 then ignore the above.)

Thank you for your advice !
Now we changed our plan ~ my grandson told me he doesn't need to use my computer for his games. He prefers his laptop.

So I am building a computer for myself on hp.com
I will use it for photos, download music, also some data entry work that I do for a few businesses.

Since I know NOTHING about building a computer, I just want to know if this would be a FAST computer? Also does this look like a good choice and it that enough memory?

I would like to go with the HP D400Y
Intel Pent D 930 (3.0 GHz) 4MB, 800 MHZ FSB
Memory- 2 GB DDR2-667MHZ dual channel SDRAM 2x1024
Hard Drive- 320GB Raid 0 (2x160GB Sata HDDs) Performance OR
400GB 7200 SATA ~ Don't know which one ?????
CD/DVD - Light Scribe 16XDVD=R/Rw Super Multi dr
Secondary CD/DVD 16X max DVD-ROM
Graphics -256MB DDR ATI Radeon X 1600XT, TV out and DVI

I appreciate if someone could let me know if this looks like a decent computer. If so, I plan to go ahead and order it.
I just want to be sure it will be Fast.
Thanks Much

yes.. for your needs that would be a way good computer, and that graphics card could do you some justice in video games too.. thats a nice build, i definitely would not have expected that from hp

Thank You
I want to get this thing ordered

Which hard drive would you suggest?
320 GB Raid 0 (2 X 160 GB Sata Hdds) Performance OR
400 GB 7200 SATA Hard Drive?

I tried to read up on them and it says: Data streams are split across two hard drives for maximum performance (with the 320 GB)
so would that be better than the 400GB 7200?

get the 2 in raid 0, they will perform incredibly fast, and since you'd be warrantied under hp, you wouldnt have to worry about the myths of hard drive failures and such

It's kind of hard when you try to order something like this online
without a salesman to help.

So it sure is nice to have boards like this to help.

My grandon is only 11 years old, so he isn't much help with this.
He just likes the idea that I use the computer all the time.
I make CD's for him.

Thanks so much for your help !!
According to the HP site it , it will be built by the 10th of April,
so I would hope to have it by the 15th or so.

I'll post again after I get it and let you know what I think of it !!

Have a good day,
Gypsy

nice, your going to love the computer.. and if your grandson uses it, you can play games like half-life 2 (do'nt know if you want an 11 year old playing a game that violent) and roller coaster tycoon 3, and sims 2 on some fairly high settings, i bet you'll love the comp you ordered, have fun with it
