I just bought a new toshiba laptop and i ordered it with 256mb ram so I could ditch that stick of ram and buy two new 1GB sticks. The 256mb stick is pc4200 533MHz. If im completely getting rid of that 256mb stick, can i buy two new sticks of ram that are a higher speed, say 667MHz? I dont know what is the max speed on the laptop, for the ram, because it does not say in the manual or specs and calling toshiba doesnt help. Here is the laptop: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c...famoid=-26377&coid=-30599&seg=HHO&poid=321560 . So basically, can i upgrade to faster ram provided that the two new sticks I buy are the same exact clock speed?

The lappy will downclock the RAM if it is faster than what it is supposed to use.

No effect on performance... just on your wallet.
