I was planning on buying a single core AMD Athlon 64 +3800 CPU but have been somewhat encouraged to get a dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 +3800 (if I can afford it).

I was reading more about the dual cores on the forum and saw mention of the need to apply a hot fix and such and only having an average understanding of PCs (enough to build my own PCs that work), the mention of farting around with hotfixes and stuff is putting me off.

Any advice?

My PC is for gaming and I just wanna play games like Oblivion, NWN2 when it comes out later this year etc.

the only fix necessary for windows XP is SP2 if you are running XP home. XP home does not have SMP support (multi-processor support) without SP2. the only other things are a driver to help with power management that will shutdown one of the cores when it is not needed to save power and patches for gaming. the gaming patches are not necessary but they can improve gameplay. they can be quite glitchy though
