Right now I need something to hold me off until vista/dx10 comes out and i can build a new system.

I need to be able to play oblivion/Ghost recon AW at respectable settings and performance.

This is what ive got:
2.0ghz northwood P4
256mb ram
ATI 9550
Asus PB4533 (Agp 4x)
500w PSU
ATX Case

I know im gonna need atleast 1gb more ram (so 1256mb total), what i need to know is if this CPU is competent enough for these newer games, given i buy a nice video card.

Im looking at these GPU's
x850xt PE
7800gs
x1600xt

And these CPU's
FX-51 (w/ pci-e mobo combo $250)
Athlon 64 3200+ or 3500+
or keeping my P4....

What new cpu is the fx-51 comparable too? Which athlon?
If i get the fx-51 i would be looking at a 7900gt for 300$.

So basically:
p4
7800gs
more ram
total $: 375

or

AMD fx-51
7900gt
ram
$650

or swap fx-51 for an athlon thats around 200$?

Okie

For RAM, you should get your RAM to run in dual channel. So get 2x512 MB matching sticks, and sell your 256 stick away.
For graphic card, i would suggest some card like 7600 gt, 7800 gt or if you have money, 7900 gt. That might cause you to buy another mobo though.
For CPU, go for AMD. If you OC, then get something like an Opty 144. If you dont, then get an 3700+, it is awesome. If you have cash, i would recommend go for a 165 Opty, it OC like ****.

my mobo right now allows me to run 2 sticks in dual channel and one on the side

so your saying a 3500+ is more powerful then a fx-51?

dont want to buy an opty, too expensive.

Looking at paying 250 for processor+mobo, 200-300 for video card

An FX-51 is the FX version of the 3700+, what kind of motherboard is it? You should go for the 7900GT.

This is what I'm thinking if the motherboard isn't very good, you could get a MSI Neo4-f PCIe motherboard (80 dollars) and a 3700+ which is $212 so it would be $312 bucks. The MSI Neo4-f is a very nice and solid motherboard and I highly recommend it.

Once the 7900s come back in stock you should grab one of them peferably EVGA, don't go with PNY.

maybe ill just get a x1600xtx agp and get some memory...then wait for dx10 cards... and buy a new system then....

will a 1600xtx agp play new games a good speeds/performance

for oblivion how does this look:
2ghz p4
1.256 ram
x1600..(which one is the best?)

btw whats better...Stock nvidia 6800 (256mb, 325 speed) or the x1600pro

hmmmmm
