To find out what you have, find out what kind of mobo you have and do some research on it. Or look at it and see if you could see "L" shaped connections like this:

However, SATA 1 Speeds are not fully utilized yet. SATA 1 & 2 Is also PNP and Hot swapable. While EIDE is not.. PNP = Plug N Play, Meaning it is auto configuring, you don't have to set any jumpers or DIP switches. Hot Swapable means you can connect and Disconnect the Drives while the Computer is on.
