I think nitestick meant the PC speaker which can often be a metal cylinder on the motherboard or an actual speaker in the case chassis.
I have heard a PC speaker hiss with static on a dead motherboard but not other than that.

Sounds like it might be related the the CPU fan then, replace it if you feel brave or send the computer in. For the cpu fan to affect performance it must be malfunctioning and you dont want to melt your CPU.

Did you look at the picture and if so did stand out?

its a gigabyte mobo but the picture it too blurry to see the components.

it might look like a cylinder with a hole in the top but for what you've posted above my money is with the cpu fan.

you can have a quick look areound your case for a speaker with wires going to your mobo, otherwise the speaker will definately be a component on the mobo

Right guys. Spoke to an IT guy today at work. He said is was simple to remove the fan and check for a build up of dust. I've done this and to be fair there was hardly any dust.

Someone else said something about heatsink. Well I've taken a couple of photos, can some please take a look and tell me if all looks well.

So far thank you all for your comments.

Today after work I went and purchased a can of compressed air and some thermal grease. I figured out how to get the fan off yesterday so was able to do the same again today. This time though I managed to figure out if I unscrewed it I could get the fan out of the casing.

I was suprised at just how much dust was in there. So I gave it a got clean (looks nearly new). I then applied the thermal grease to the CPU (read that a rice grain size amount was about right) and refitted everything.

So far so good. My idle temps are alot lower. Previously idle my system was about 45C to 49C. It's now 39C.

The biggest difference is my CPU temp. Before idle it was anywhere from 58C to 64C. It's now steady at about 38C. The big test will be when I test it under load. When I've played games in the past it was at 83C. Today when I got home it was 87C and that was after leaving it on for a few hours to download.

I will try it later this evening to see how it compares and whether it makes the hissing sound.

Oh forgot to mention. Yesterday when I put the CPU fan back in at first the computer wouldn't start up properly. It said there was an error with the floppy disk drive (Drive A. After trying a couple of times it started up, however it now shows in my Computer a Drive A which doesn't exist as I don't have a floppy drive.

Anyone shed any light on this?

I would clean out the dust first, and see if it fixes the problem. But, it sounds like to me that the bearings are going out in one of the fans. Do you know if the processor fan is a variable speed fan? What I think is that the processor fan kicks into 'high gear' when the processor is under a load and the bearings starting to make the noise.

as for the floppy drive problem, who knows.if its not giving you the same error anymore i wouldnt sweat it.

The reason your pc is lagging is because your cpu is overheating when its under a load. 83c is way to hot. Pull the cpu heat sink and fan. Clean all the dust out of the fins. Clean old thermal grease from the cpu and heat sink. Reapply thermal grease and re seat the cpu heat sink to the possessor.

As far as the hissing sound. I don't know what that could be. Maybe a fan or the power supply.
