Hello people.
I'm thinking to upgrading my old P-3 computer. I don't play any games, The only processor-intensive tasks i do - is convert audio and video formats. So apperantly i don't need any 3-d accelerator card. I already have some Socket A (462) motherboard. I just need to buy some Athlon XP processor, and ddr memory.

Now about the video card. I have loads of some very old stuff, among them some 2-4-8 mb video cards from P-1(2) era. All Agp cards I have - are rated 3volts. So appearantly they won't work on new board. (I checked specification: board only supports 1.5v agp 2x or 4x cards).
But I also have some old PCI video card (w/ 8mb) (Ati Rage II 1996').
Can I use this card as my default video card? I checked it on old P-II boards. Card works OK, and bios accepts it , (even though this card is PCI and not AGP, and AGP slot is empty).

Will this old card work on new board for AthlonXP?
And if it does, can it make me any possible problems, becaus it is 10 years old?
Thanks for your time.

P.s: I checked this card on P-II, it suppors all needed resolutions , and suppors overlay mode - which is needed for movie watching on PC. - which is the only thing i need from this card.

It ought to... as long as you have driver s for it. Today's drivers may not support it.

Windows XP requires an 8 MB video card minimum.
I have tried a 4 MB video card, doesnt function at all.

The ATI Rage II might work, but you will get a MAX resolution of about 1280*1024 256-color.

As long as you like lower resolutions, but i always keep mine at 1024*768, personally.

Thanks much. No problem with drivers, Win XP and 2000 have built-in drivers for this card. By the way, I was searching for processors, and found out that Socket A (462) is absolete, and there are no new processors that would fit in this socket. So I need to look for older processor from Ebay or somewhere..
What is the best (fastest) processor that would fit in Socket A (462)?

Ps: the board is Gigabyte GA-7VAX
