not entirely true , the graphic card indeed plays an important part , however theres a deep connection between the cpu to the graphic card. if you mix a fast graphic card with a not so good cpu it will limit its performance
 
a lot of ppl say that theres no point getting 6800 cos the price is close to one from the 7000 series. have a look around b4 u buy.

I believe that's called bottlenecking. What you have to remember is that all the data from your gpu will eventually have to pass through to the cpu, if your cpu is crap, then even if you get yourself a 7800GS and you have some crumby celeron, your card's performance is gonna be cut by like 80%, plus the cpu has to manage the physics engine, game script processing and manage all that porn you're downloading as well. So look at your cpu and see how good/bad it is and find a graphics card that bests suits it. You don't have to really get the best thing out there because it will most likely be bottlenecked. Then again, if you're looking to make a new pc, you could get an awesome card now and transfer it later into your newer pc. Whatever butters your biscuit.
