enterprise messenger?

Hey guys, newbie here!

Well I'm an IT Techie and my boss let me have a shot at a project to implement a service for better communication in the form of an EIM.

Does anyone know of an enterprise messenger client that doesn't need any dedicated servers bought in specially? I was hoping to get one I could just stick on an existing NT server.

I used to use VCM a few years ago. I dont know if its what you are looking for. No server needed
