Netvista is getting old and I'm a bit lost here trying to identify the componants and compatability, and find what kind of motherboard and cpu to buy as an upgrade, Will probably have to upgrade ram and harddrive as well to boost performance? Any recommendations?

so is your comp socket 478?

and how much money are you planning on investing into this upgrade? what kind of video card do you have? what do you plan to do with this computer? what hard drive do you have?

will be better able to help you if you provide more details.

Yeah is a socket 478
video card is a Nvidia geforce FX5900
harddrive is a Maxtor 6L080J4 (75GB)

Not sure how much I want to spend probably between $500-$1000 its a gaming computer mostly. But runs a lot of other apps plus internet and dvd's.

You asked about what socket i have? Does that mean i can only buy a socket 478 motherboard and cpu as a replacement upgrade?

well if you wanted to keep same cpu then you'd need to get an old mobo. but since you're spending upto $1000 you can definitely get a new mobo/cpu and stuff.. i'll see what i can do.. (i say that a lot..)

ok here it goes..

asus mobo $81

dual core processor 3800+ $295

2GB OCZ platinum ram (2X1gb) $195

450watt reliable power supply (vid card i chose recommends 400watt..) $51

eVGA 7900gt $319 (out of stock now, but they should get lots soon)

total : $940.97 - $40 mail in rebate (OCZ) = $900.97

add shipping and taxes.

and keep your hard drive, optical drives, monitor, keyboard, etc.

if you wanted a new harddrive, you'd have to downgrade some other part or else you'd go over $1000 (thats if you got a good hard drive..) - and most likely any perforamnce boost you get would be a lot smaller than the performance loss you'd get from downgrading some of the parts i recommended. if you're hard drive is 7200rpm then you have no problem in just keeping it.

i know i went more towards the $1000 than $500. you could still get a good comp for $500.. you'd have to from dual core ot single core, 7900gt to a 6800gs, and 2gb ram to 1gb ram. if you can spare the $1K, thats a mean build!

good luck.
