as it turns out, the problem was that my default printer was a shared printer connected to another machine. if that machine was turned off and word couldn't find the printer, it crashed. nice huh??
so I installed a little "print to file" printer and set that as default -- problem solved.
I'd been suffering with this problem for like 2 years!! thank god it's solved lol
