re-applying thermal paste

Hi everybody!!! If I replace a CPU heatsink and fan do i have to clean off the old paste on the cpu before putting on the new stuff?

Yes, you do. Take some alcohol and water on a Q-Tip and rub the old stuff off, careful not to get it into any of the components.

You have to clean it every time you change the HSF. Ive heard this stuff works really good: ArctiClean. Or like macdude saide, use some alcohol and carefully clean off all the old paste.

What kinda isopropyl rubbing alcohol should i use? Like the 99% stuff you get at the pharmacy or the 70% stuff on the grocery-store shelves

Use the higher content alcohol, it evaporates much cleaner. I believe 91% is what is recommended.
