i c. and how do u put it on the heat sink and where is the heat sink exactly, im new to mobo's/CPUS

It's a big chunk of metal designed to disperse heat (high surface area-to-volume ratio). It's the only other thing that came with your CPU.

I dunno if you should spread the paste with a credit card; when you pull the card off it probably creates little air bubbles, which is why they tell you not to pull the heatsink off and then back on without replacing the paste.

EDIT: John, do you have your mobo, CPU, and paste in front of you? If so, it should be pretty self-explanatory.

only time i ever replace mine is when i take the HSF off, so mines been on for close to a year now, temps still the same.

That is the only time you really need to take it off.There is no reason to do it.

Yea, I never replace mine for the sake of it. Now reformatting a HDD every so often... that's a different story

A heatsink is quite large in comparison to the CPU. The CPU is about 1/8" high with 1 1/2" sides. Your average heatsink sits on the CPU and is about 3" high with 4" sides.

When you buy your CPU, it will be very obvious what the heatsink is (the CPU is the thing with the pins, and the heatsink is the only other thing in there, and it's BIG), and the instructions tell you (graphically) how to put it on.

lol thanx guys, i knew wat a cpu was, i just didnt no wer the heat sink is. and how do you put thermal paste on any of those heatsinks?

it's like this... the pins on the CPU go into the motherboard, and the flat part of the heat sink sits on top of the CPU. The thermal paste is put BETWEEN them to conduct the heat from the CPU to the heat sink. If no thermal paste is used, heat will not transfer as quickly, or effeciently, and the CPU will overheat.

1. Place the processor in the motherboard.
2. Get the thermal paste syringe, and shoot some on the middle of the top of the processor.
3. Insert heatsink firmly.

All done. The pressure from the heatsink being snapped/held into place applies enough force to spread the thermalpaste over the surface area of the processor.
