I am building a new puter.
I have a huge 15g hdd now but no dvd drive. my new build will have a dvd and ill most likely start loading movies on it.

I am wondering if bigger is better.

I am only getting one hdd. Should I get one smaller drive now and add another later? or get one hefty one now?

I was thinking of getting a 160g hdd but the 250 are not that much more. and a 250g 16m cache is only another $5

Does/ will a bigger drive mean longer seek times and longer scan times?

And I am trying to build a quiet and cool system so would this play a factor?

8mg cache vs 16m cache?

thanks

yeesh, these things just keep getting cheaper and cheaper. Last time I checked it was $95 for a WD 200gb HD with 8mb cache, now a 250gb with 16mb cache for the same price? Nice, might have to pick me up one, but theres a 68" samurai sword for the same price that's calling my name :p

No, shouldn't effect it in terms of what you'd actually notice. Don't do like me though and let your huge drive become completely fragmented :p It still works fine and whatnot, but sometimes it does that crap where it doesn't want to delete a file.

Although I doubt you'd notice a huge significant difference between 8mb cache and 16mb cache, the fact that you can get 90gb more, plus that extra 8mb cache for what...$13 more, you should definitely get the western digital.

The bigger drives get a little hotter because of the platters and such, however noise won't be an issue.

Nubius,

Thanks alot!

So would I be dumb to not get the 250g 16m cache HDD?

I know the RPM does make heat issues with it moving faster but the cache, does it make any noise or heat issues?

Why are the smaller drives like:Raptor WD740GD 74GB
So super poular? Is it because it is older and the bigger SATA stuff wasnt out yet?

Should I not get 1 smaller faster drive and 1 bigger 1(for storage)?

Thanks again

I would go with the WD Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 16MBC.
Are you going to compress your movies?

midi_junkie,

Yeah I bet the therm laughs at heat, it has like 4 fans. my objective is a quiet system. I am not a gamer.
