auto gk (free. the second best software encoder) route

Ok so i download AUTOGK from

Now do i convert my origonal AVI file to what?

After i get the converted file which program do i use to burn it to a CD-R

Well all I did was convert it to MPEG with TMPEng or something ( i think ) then split it into 2 files then burned it on 2 cds.. it worked but there was always 2 black lines at the side making it small and the sound cut off like 60% into the movie..
