do I really neeD thermal paste?

Big difference:

When using it on a bare core, you are susposed to spread a thin layer of it evenly over the entire core with a clean object, like a razor.

If it is not a bare core, it's a lot easier. You just put a small dab of it in the center of the CPU about the size of a grain of rice and a half, then put the heatsink down on top of it and let the pressure spread it out.

Back to the question:
I really would get it... its $10 includin shipping and lowers your temps. by 10C most of the time.. it just makes me feel good about my processor.
And you WILL need it to overclock

you are also supposed to spread a thin layer on the base of the HSF to fill in any recesses on the heatsinks surface. then clear it away which will leave the gaps on the HSF's surface filled in with AS5. i would just like to point out that this question probably comes up at least 2-5 times a week on the forum

Thermal paste is just to keep the temps down a little but the stuff AMD chips come is pretty good.
