I will soon be getting a 160Gb HD and I have heard several people say that they have a partition. I wonder if you could answer a few questions?

1. What is a Partition?

2. why Should I have one?

3. Why should I NOT have one?

4. How do I make one?

1. A partiton is a piece of your harddrive separated from another part of your harddrive, and your operating system will see each partition as a seperate harddrive.

2. If you have more than one OS, or want to keep important files seperate from the main harddrive.

3. Because you don't need it...?

4. Using Partiton Magic, fdisk, cfdisk, QTParted, GParted, or any number of partitioning tools out there.

What are the benefits then? I keep all my files in different folders, is it the same kind of thing?

I have a 250GB hard drive and the way I partitioned it is I put my OS and programs on an 8GB partition (the system partition) and I put the pagefile in a 1.5GB partition and the rest of the drive is one big partition for everything else. I may add some more partitions yet before I start downloading stuff onto this drive (it's new and still empty).
