Windwos file is Corrupted/Missing

hi all, just got a call from my cousin and he has a problem with his machine when he boots up a message comes up windwos missing file/sysem32/config (or something like that

I want to use the dell recovery cd (win xp), when booting that up it says press r to repair, (so i done that), then it say enter the system you wnat to enter and gives the option "1:c:/windows" so i press 1 then the system goes into the c:windows dir in dos and that is it

What am i doing wrong

what he needs to do is get all his data out (so formatting cannot be done)

Try to replicate the problem or error and get the file that you are missing and go to www.technet.com and search for that file Most likely if it is a system32 file they will have it download the file and follow the instructions

you might be missing the system file or one of the other 4 files within the config folder..... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q307545
