So thanks to a tax return I'm going to end up with $1300 to build a pc... I should say my first because the piece of crap HP I've had for the last 4 years I don't want to dignify as a pc lol... Anyhow I'm pretty naive & I'm at least smart enough not to trust my own judgement. Here is what I have so far critique at will;

This pc will do a good amount of gaming, a lot of dvd/cdr burning, fair amount of storage & a lot of in general mindless browsing. I noticed everyone likes newegg around here but I just found this forum & am a fan of pricewatch so I ended up going with supergooddeal.com customized barebones system

**update**
After using the search functions thoroughly (thanks to all you cpu gods out there) I decided to save up a litte more & buy a better pc...
All through newegg;

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 1GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA4400CDBOX - Retail

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Platinum System Memory Model

Logitech Internet Pro Desktop 967457-0403 Black PS/2 Wired Standard Keyboard Mouse Included - OEM

Logitech X-530 70 Watts 5.1 Speaker

Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-DR Expert Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard

Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM

Update Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Thermaltake XASER, Armor Series VA8000BWS Black Aluminum/Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

eVGA 256-P2-N516 Geforce 7800GT CO SE 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail

ASUS Black IDE DVD Burner With 2X DVD-RAM Read Model DRW-1608P2 BK - OEM

The DFI board is a little intimidating to me still but from everything I've read this is a better setup & I'll take my time getting familiar with everything... besides I have more time now that I have to save up a little more lol

Poor PSU, go with Antec at least if not OCZ.

Poor motherboard, go with DFI, solid mobo's and great for OCing.

Memory is okay, not exactly the best brand, especially if OCing. Stick with OCZ or Kingston if OCing, if not some Patriot or Geil Value RAM works.

You definitely want at least a PCI-e X1300, 6200 or 7300GS as a video card, at a minimum. If your gaming, shoot for nothing less than the 6800GS or X1800XL.

Go with Newegg. The prices are better. I wouldn't buy from a company with that kind of name. :p

I'm not too sure about your brand choice on the RAM and PSU.

I can do a little better for that price on newegg.

CPU: AMD X2 4400: Good CPU. Price on Newegg = $460 (maybe a little bit higher after the 1 day sale, but still well below $525)

PSU: Antec Trupower2 550W. The one you picked won't be very reliable. Price = $90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103931

Mobo: ASUS A8N5X. Price = $90 The one you picked is old.

RAM: 2GB OCZ DDR400 RAM Price = $180 (after mail in rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227210

Hard Drive: Western Digital 320GB 16MB cache SATA150. Price = $130
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136003

DVD burner: ASUS DVD RW drive Price = $40
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827135046

Video Card: eVGA Geforce 6800GS Price = $154 (after rebates)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130267

Speakers: Logitech X-530 5.1 Speakers Price = $60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121118

Total=$1200

That leaves about $100 for a case and your keyboard/mouse.

Note: shipping is not included in price.

Smart man ;)

Change the CPU to a Opteron 165.

Sounds very familiar... lol

Just from reading the forums I respect apokalipse & your opinion, however the only reason I am hesitant is because I am as stated "very naive" I didn't know what parts to put together, now that I am I know that I am providing a foundation I can overclock if I feel I learn enough to do so in the future... but if I don't the opteron will be slower from what I've read & I am not completely sure I will OC even though it's very tempting..

I dunno, it still crosses my mind I'm just not completely sold & I have a month or 2 to make my mind up..

Answer me this if I snagged a AMD Opteron 170 or 175 it's the same cpu just a little faster correct? because I'm more likely to snag a 170 or 175
