Geeze just get a Sempron 3000+ or something.
1gb of Value Select RAM
Get a $100 to $150 Video Card
What ever kind of hard drive you need. Dont get too caught up with buying an expensive one.
A 400 watt Antec PSU

And yea that should be more then enough. The only reason everyone here is getting 2gb of RAM a geforce 7800GTX and super duper CPUs is because all of these people game. For what you are doing you will not not the highest end system.

Well - my boss WANTS the best computer that we can get - this is an investment for us, and we'll be using it to present all of our images to the people inside the MRI, now and in the future. So I do want the best one for our purposes, but don't want to go way overkill. I'm trying to find an equlibrium point, projecting into what we'll need in the future also.

If your boss says go all out, go all out, but the 7800gtx is a gaming card, maybe a Quadro card will be slightly better, as your company may want to create a 3d presentation in the future. Alot more likley than playing Half Life 2 for a client.

Snick, you say:
you have 2 seperate sticks of ram...you can probably get a 2 gb dual channel kit with heat spreaders already on the ram for less than that...

Could you explain that a bit more?

Thanks.

well, you have 2 of these
which is $205.54
or you could get
Corsair 2gb $179.67
or
OCZ 2gb $184.66
or
Patriot 2gb $188.61
having the heatspreaders on the ram helps keep them from overheating....i know you will probably be running everything at stock, but it's a little extra protection on the investment.

No no no, images are 2D rendering jobs. Why areyou guys all reccomending VIDEO GAMING CARDS?

What you SHOULD be getting is a Quadro or a FireGL card.

septoid - why the opteron instead of the athlon?

And to all - what are the main advantages of having two processors over a dual-core processor?

Thanks!
