External harddrive is "Unknown Device"

The laptop does have USB 2.0, it's not even a year old.

It was working, but it just chooses when to stop working =P. I'm formatting soon, when I get my new PC done. So hopefully that'll fix it.

Oops. Sorry. Must have misread something along the lines.

I would say that the HDD should be installed on the top port and the iPod on the bottom port. Leave the middle one alone.

If all else fails maybe you just need to update you USB drivers.
