Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my existing graphics card for one that will provide me with better performance whilst using Solidworks and Proengineer 3D modelling software. I have just been offered a PhD Doctorate degree so need something powerful and reliable.

I am running a Pentium 4 HT 3.4Ghz Processor with 1Gb of Corsair 2-5-2-2 latancy RAM. So l am pretty sure its nothing there slowing down my system when l 3D model.

I currently have a 256Mb ATi Radeon 9800 Pro card for the AGP slot which is great for games but doesn't appear to be right for 3D modelling some how as l experiance slowing and delayed processing of commands especially when applying mates, forces and motions to a model (for anyone that has experiance l guess you know what l mean here).

I would like to have another AGP card but other than that am quite open to suggestions. I have a budget of around £250-£300 but l would like to see a marked improvment for my money as the old card l have is only 6months old and would be pretty much worthless 2nd hand and set me back what l thought was alot of money for a graphics card cough cough little did l know. So if anyone here thinks the £250-300 could be better spent on other optimisations for a greater all round benefit then l'd like to know about that too as l really don't want to be almost £500 down and still not be able to do what l want to do.

Thanks for any help people here can offer.

Ya... I'd suggest a 7800GS if you're looking to stay AGP. They perform pretty well for doing 3D. I'm going to be buying a 7800GT since my budget doesn't allow for a workstation card.

Thanks for the advice l'll take a look at their shipping arrangements for the UK. Never heard of that company before but there seems to be alot of good gear on there.

I would go for a PCI but l have used all my slots with other stuff...typical student with plently of things running off the PC all the time.

**memo**he is as she lol ;-)

my bad..

but anyway, if you are not gaming, then the Quadro will probabbly suit best. a 7800 GT is fast, but it doesn't specialise in 3D modelling, so it won't be as fast as the Quadro in that area.

Ahh that could be my problem l like gaming too...not hardcore like those kids you see that argue over who has the best weapons and never leave their computers but l do like the odd flutter.

If l brought a very high powered gaming card say one with 512mb of RAM would that have the potential to run games and 3D modelling..? Or is there never really that much of an improvement with a gaming card for the extra money.

My ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 256Mb runs my games pretty well (could be better but can't really complain) but only really lets me down on the 3d modelling when l am adding the forces, mates and motion.

Thanks for the help.

i believe that the 512 isnt much better thna the 256 games dont/cant take advantage of that capabilitys yet ... but for 3d mod.. .i dont know ....

bear that in mind looks like l might have to scrafice one of the other at this rate.

Might just leave it how it is. Just a bit scared of being in the middle of some modeling for my PhD and the computer deciding it wants to crash the program on me due to unavalible video memory.
