what is a "barebone" computer system?

i have seen some on tiger direct that have dvd-rw, KB, mouse, power supply.

looks like a complete PC without monitor and OS.

so if somebody had xp and monitor from their old system, they could basically have a new system for $298?

If the barebone kit had everthing else, yes. Some kits dont have every necessary part in them.

yeah but you cant necessarily make thta assumption. Some barebones only come with a case and a motherboard. Others come with a case, a motherboard, and ram. some expensive ones come with a case motherboard cpu and ram.

barebone setups tend to kindof be a rip off... They're designed to target a part of the market that I fell into about 8-9 months ago. I didn't think that I could actually buy each component alone and build the WHOLE computer. It just doesn't strike people that it's simple and a readily available option to build thier own. So what they think is that these barebone setups are good deals. Stray away from them.
