i have an old PIII machine. i am trying to put linux on it, but it is refusing to work properly.

it will not boot of any cds. i have tried windows ones, and linux ones, live and install. (the bios is set up ok)

when i try putting the hdd in another computer, it always messess up halfway through the install.

is this a HDD problem? if so, i dont see why it would stop a computer booting from a cd. also, if so, does anyone know where i can buy a cheap <10GB ide HDD?

thanks

Sounds like a bad optical drive and hard drive. If you have two optical drives in that computer(or spare) switch them around then try the linux live CD.

Check your drive cables. There's always a chance of motherboard or RAM failures causing problems.

Google "computer show" and the name of you city/town/region and see when a computer show will swing by your neighborhood. There's usually a few booths selling legacy equipment for cheap. YMMV.
