hello

after many twists and turns i've decided to build a new system. i'm interested in expandability and long system life (i'd love to be able to swap the cpu on this thing in a year or two and still have something up to date).

i'm mainly interested in:

a) maximum music ripping speeds- i have a lot of music and i want to turn it all into MP3s, this is critical

b) video editing/DVD copying- necessary but less critical

c) i'm not interested in gaming but i have some interest in using this machine to capture VHS into DVD format

i already have a decent HD but i am interested in maximazing the addition of other HDs in the future

i'm not sure what mobo to go with. does LGA775 have a longer life because its newer?

is it worth it to look into dual cores?

i admit to being a total newb and particularly in regard to dual technology

budget: not sure what it would take to do all of this but i'd be willing to sacrifice some speed right now for future potential. for single CPU config i can spend ~$750 (i don't need a monitor, keyboard, etc).

any help on this would be greatly appreciated

A case and power supply of your choice. I think I may have gone over a little, but you can trim it to your liking.

Nock the GPU down to a 6200, and get a SATA hdd. Maybe a bit bigger for those movies.

Make sure you get a decent PSU. Fortron will be fine for that - 400w's or so.

couple of questions about the mobo/cpu setup. how does the mobo you picked out stack up against (for instance) this one ? obviously, there's a huge price difference, but what else?

i'm interested in getting the most for my money on things like the mobo and not so much in getting the fastest CPU (hence my argument for 'upgradeability') , meaning that if i can get a mobo that will have a longer 'life span' but costs a little more, i'll willingly sacrifice CPU speed right now. does that make sense?

also, i'm still curious about the LGA775- do people not recommend it? if not, why? again, to clarify, i'm not into gaming but are there other reasons people still seem to prefer the 939 socket?

The X2 is such a good processor, thats why we like it so much. It beats the P4 dual cores in nearly every test, and it costs alot less too.

still interested in the mobo questions (both why 939 over LGA and the comparison between the two mobos)
