I've never been in this position so I wasn't sure what the answer is. He's got an 80 gig hard drive on his computer. He wants to build a new one. Can he just take the hard drive out of the old, put in the new, and it work fine?

yea... well depends. What kind of hard drive is it? He might not have the right cables

Not worried about that, what I was worried about is I wasn't sure if the different hardware components the hard drive wouldn't like and wouldn't function properly. The different cables I'm aware of and we'll sort through that later.

Unless your buddy is keeping the same motherboard and components he is going to have to format the drive.

Nope, he's changing everything BUT the hard drive. Just what I needed to know, thanks.

He will have to format the hard drive.... make sure he backs up what he has.

There is ONE option.... if he gets a new hard drive, and uses the existing 80 Gig as a slave drive... there wont be a problem if he isn't booting off of it.
