Microsoft's OneCare beta, a security bundle released by Microsoft in November combines anti-spyware software, antivirus software, firewall software, and some tune up tools into one package. The final release is expected this year and will need a subscription.

However, this security protection software might not give the security protection it speaks of.

By default, OneCare allows applications that use the Java Virtual Machine or have a digital signature to connect to the Internet.

Any security software should deny by default. In short, a firewall should block everything and ask the user what to allow. However, OneCare allows everything and asks the user what to block. Any door should be closed, unless it is needed to be open.

Also OneCare has been renamed to Windows Defender. It will be the only AV/Firewall that will be able to install on Vista. Can you say lawsuit against M$.

Symantec is readying a competitor to Microsoft's Windows OneCare Live security subscription service.

The new Symantec offering, code-named "Genesis," is expected to integrate elements of Symantec's current security, PC optimization and backup products.

This product will also be sold on a subscription basis some time later this year.
