Need advice on choosing motherboard and chip

I appologize in advance if this has already been covered in this forum but I could not find the answer...

Would you techie geniuses please explain to me from the begining how to go about choosing a new motherboard and processor?

I have built three machine before but what I knew a year or two ago hardly seems to apply now. What are my options? What brands? What cost?

I use my computer for gaming...

think price range, whatever you got at a certain price, get whatever there is now at the same price.

P4 extreme: around a grand for 4.0 ghz daul core
AMD 4800+: around $700 for 2.6 ghz daul core

thats kinda the top right now....i dont know much about ATI cards though....

top notch things need over 600 watts usually. Everythigng else you'll have to sort by price

yea that is top, but you dont need all that for a gaming rig.

You could keep it simpler and still have a good gaming rig.

this is a cheap but good processor for normal gaming use. but if you want to go higher than this will suit you just fine:

its an AMD athlon 64 3800 x2. it is a dual core processor .

As for videocard the standard cheap but good videocard is the 6600gt:

and as for motherbords go. Im AMD their newest socket is 939. so all their new processors will run i a socket 939 motherboard. Some good motherboard brands are DFI, MSI, Abit, Asus, Giga byte, and Biostar is an ok brand too since they came out with their new T Force motherboards. The amin thing in a motherboard is the chipset. Try to get an nvidia chipset. An nforce4.

So all i am trying to say is that you dont need to buy a $1,000 processor and an $800 videocard just to have a good aming rig.

If possible can you talk a little more about the type of boards and chips and which are compatible with which?

You need to look at the CPU socket type on the motherboard to determine what CPU will be compatable with it. EG) If you have a Socket 775 P4, then you need a mobo that supports P4's and has a 775 pin socket for the CPU. Same with AMD. Currently you would most likely buy a s939 board, so you need a s939 processor.
Or if you have a s939 CPU, you need to find a motherboard that has the corresponding socket (in this case 939)
