Intel vs AMD can be argued all day long which im not going to even say what i prefer cause I have used both and both are honestly good decisions. If your going Dual Core however i would go AMD unless you feel like spending 1000 dollars on the top Intel dual core which is pretty nice ;). If you think you might overclock then i would go with amd as well.

I can get an intel 3.8 ghz pentium D dual core for 300 about.

it is a 800 mhz FSB though which is kinda disapointing, but I shoulden't really notice that and I could upgrade later when the price drops some. But this still dosen't mean I am definatly getting the Intel, I am a prefectionist so I'll probobly spend a while reaserching.
