Win XP and Windows Update

I just got a computer and I have windows xp pro installed on it. I installed service pack 1 from windowsupdate.com and everything worked fine during the install. When I went back to install more updates, windows update says that it "Cannot validate the product key". A friend of mine had a problem where somebody had a copy of winxp illegally installed on their system with his legit CD, but in his case they wouldn't even let him install service pack 1. Mine didn't give me this error until after installing SP1, so I don't know what the problem is. I am certain that the copy of XP I have is a legit copy. Does anybody know what the problem is? I certainly am stumped.

How sure are you that it is a legit copy? It happens that someone could have an illegal copy of XP and used a keygen and conincidentally generated your product key. In that case, all I can tell you, is that you are S.O.L. If you are 100% CERTAIN that it is a legal copy of XP, call Microsoft and get ahold of their tech support and tell them of your conundrum. Other than that, I have nothing else I could tell you.
