it doesn't necessarily have to run hot to cause artifacts, sometimes the particular architecture restricts it from running at higher frequencies. it also varies from chip to chip how far you can overclock

apok is right. My x700 doesn't get near the threshhold temperatures at all. It just stops working correctly at 496mhz. Set those clock speeds back to default and ease it up a little more slowly. Don't just crank it and expect it to work.
