Upgrade

I got my 1 GB of ram today, (it owns, it OWNS!, the loading screens in half life 2 are down to about 20 seconds, rather than 60) and I have made a big decision (ok, it's not that big). I'm putting my watercooling project on hold to upgrade my PC. I have a budget of about 650, and I want to upgrade my processor and move to PCI-E. I want to get a new motherboard, a video card, and a processor.

I think I will go with:

Opteron 165
DFI lanparty ultra d
eVGA 6800gs

Total is about 675.

What do you think? I have quite a few other questions too, but for now I just need to know that.

Looks good. I wouldnt expect too much of a performance increase from your 3800, though. The extra core is gonna be nice, but you lose a pretty hefty chunk of clock speed. I guess it depends on what you use the computer for.

ive heard the DFI boards are amazing and i kinda wish i would have got one. But i pretty much agree, the 3800+ is still a very powerful processor in the scheme of things. If i were you, i'd wait a while before doing a major upgrade like this. I usually wait at least three years when i have to put games to medium and it still glitches up..... different strokes for different folks i guess

I'm going with the same video card and processor for my new PC. If you aren't wanting the absolute top of the line, those look like good choices to me.

Well, I know the optys are awesome at overclocking, and I will still be setting up a watercooling system soon, combine that with a DFI board...

Do you guys really think I should get a dual core? I really would like to save some money, would it be better to go with a opty 148 which is only .2 ghz lower? It is 110 bucks cheaper and can still be overclocked very well?

I think I would prefer an opty 148 so my total would 570 with shipping....

How long are you planning on having the computer? The dual core will last quite a bit longer than the single core.

For a long time. I can upgrade the processor later if I REALLY need to, but I think if I overclock it enough it will last a while.
