iTunes cannot be removed when updating to a newer version

When trying to install itunes i get this error:

'Error 1714. The older version of iTunes cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.'

After clicking ok I get this error,

'Error:-1603 Fatal error during installation.
Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information'

I have tried removing it manually (as well as from add/remove programs), removing it from the registry, and also trying in safe mode. Installing Quicktime 6 first then iTunes after.

doesnt sound good...

i would make sure everything in the task manager related to itunes is terminated (close ituneshelper,ipodservice,itunes.exe)

if that doesnt work, do a virus, spyware scan and also do a hijackthis log
