what cpu are you using, what graphics slots do you need, more information is necessary

right now i got a 32-bit PIII processor I'll probably get a 64-bit PIV one.
For the RAM, I don't konw...I have 512, but I GB would be faster, that'll probably take care of things like graphics and sound. Of course it'll have to support SATA hard disks (think most have that these days)

You'll need to find out what socket your processor is. Most likely, it's slot 370, but there's a mentionable chance that it's slot 1. As far as ram goes, those P3's were right on the line. Some use PC100 or PC133, and others use DDR. You need to find out what kind of ram you have. I suggest downloading a program called CPU-Z and report back here with the:
Processor Socket
Ram Type
Ram Speed
Type of Video Card you'll be using

A socket is where the processor goes.
So you will need to match the socket number on the processor with the socket supported on the Motherboard.
For example for an Intel Pentium 4 Chips you'll see Socket 478 or LGA 775 (there may be others I'm not that familiar with Intel). If you have a Prescott series Chip, you'll want to a motherboard that accepts processors with socket 478.
Think of a nuts and bolts. You have to match the correct threading and size nut to fit on the bolt.

Well if I do that, how exactly do motherboards differ? I know some support SATA drives and some have more pci slots but is that the only thing I need to consider?

There are several things to look for
Graphix card.
Integrated, PCI-Express, SLI, or AGP
Number of add-ons.
For example are you going to add on a PVR
Number of USB ports
Do you want Firewire
Amount of Memorey something like - 4x 184pin DDR
means you can put 4 sticks of 184 pin DDR memorey.
Do you want DDR2 Memorey.
FSB Speed, etc...
There are a lot of different application and needs.
As far as Buy the Motherboard and build around it. I think you need to ask yourself, what are your plans? Are you going to upgrade are you going to overclock, etc.
Give the group what you want to do and what your plans are and I'm sure they can give you a better answer
