hardware sound problem

hi i have recently built my own p.c an everything seems to be workin fine. whenever i try to play my music/video on the windows xp loaded p.c i get an error message saying

problem with sound hardware.

do i need to install sound blaser chip?? on the p.c becuase i thought the motherboard already has this.. is the the problem or is it something else i havent done???

This may be a dumb question, but are all the proper sound drivers installed?

we'll ive just put all the harware together..
asus motherboard, p4 3.0 dvd rom, 512 and a modem just to get the p.c running.. ive only installed on it win xp after setin up bios.. but when i try runnin a disk on it says sound hardware error.. no hardware detected!

so just wondering if there is a part i need to put in with the motherboard to get that to work>>??
