ok at the moment my PC is kind of lame;
2ghz AMD athlon xp2400
1gb ddr400
raedon 9200se 128mb
74gb 7200rpm hdd

AND i was wondering if this would be worth building over the next couple of years (i dont care about cost i have nothing else to spend money on)

Western Digital Raptor 36GB 10000rpm SATA $188.04 x2
GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB PCI Express 3 $1399.16 x2
2GB ECC PC3200 DDR400 SDRAM $420.39 x6
AMD Opteron 280 $2335.16 x2
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro $740.65 x1
Creative GigaWorks S750 THX 7.1 Speakers $859.50 x1
Tyan Thunder K8WE Dual Opteron SLI $673.88 x1
Philips 22" 202P flat monitor $934.88 x1
Samsung TS-H552 Dual Layer 16X DVD Writer $63.77 x1
Thermaltake Armour Case with 430W PSU $392.63 x1
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard $104.61 x1
Logitech G5 Laser Mouse $104.61 x1
Enermax 600 690 Watt PSU ATX $240.00 x1
Windows XP PRO oem 64 bit edition $260.00 x1

$13154.39
(note this is all in New Zealand $$)

now the questions i have are;
1)would this be good value for money or just a plain ripoff?
2)would the stock cooling be good enough?
3)do you know where i could get these parts cheaper?
4)Do you know where it is possible to (easily) buy registered ecc 4gb ddr 400 ram?

What is going to be the main use of this computer? I see you are getting a gaming mouse and keyboard, so if your not building an uber workstation/server, then dont get the dual opterons and the ECC RAM.
And dont get windows XP 64 bit. It has many driver problems, just stick to 32 bit.

stock cooling is enough unless you overclock a lot.

First off, don't go with dual processors. Thats just a no no, if your overclocking you will be limited. Don't get 12 gigs of ram, windows can't even handle 4 gigs right now, 3 at most. Along with those raptors get a back up drive in raid for all your storage.

this is going to be used for gaming/game making

so you dont think it is worth it to get opterons

should i just go single cpu with ddr2 ram or sumthing?

I wouldn't say it's a rip off, im just gonna say that you don't NEED half of the stuff that is there.... and a 36gb HD x2?? So far on my new pc ive filled up 80gb. You will need more memory than that, unless you meant 360gb.....

Its worth it to get opterons, but get socket 939 ones, not the 940 ones. Get a 170 or something. Get a motherboard to match your processor, like the DFI lanparty ultra-d sli or something

As powerslave said, DONT get that RAM
1- WAY to expensive
2- not necessary
3- that much is not supported and will cause problems
current AMD's dont support ddr2, you have to wait a few months for the M2 (i think its M2) socket

If your spending that much on a psu, get a PcP&C one, they are the best out there. Only get one of the video cards, because $3400 on video cards..................... Plus no game out there uses both of them to their full extent. Wait until the 8 series if you want to sli them and are willing to spend that much money.

Only get one of the hard drives and get a much larger (300GB) storage drive. Put your OS and apps on the raptor and everything elso on the storage drive.

so what would be THE best opteron for 939 the dual core 175 or what?

ALSO i found a Motherboard in my wardrobe that my mum reminded me about (man im forgetful!!) and was wondering if this would be any good its a gigabyte K8 triton series (GA-K8NF-9)

I guess the "best" is the 180, but has a high price tag and the 165 and 170 can be overclocked to 180 speeds for a fraction of the price.
as you can see, the only differences are - 1) the name, 2) the price and 3) the speed.
Id say go for the 170 and overclock it to however high you can go.
If you overclock it get the DFI board and a better CPU cooler than stock like the scythe ninja or zalman 9500, or even water cooling.

EDIT: sorry bad link

Your mobo looks decent, but i dont know about the overclockability on it.

ok thanks for the help i have decided on the opteron 170 and my mobo (4 now)

now for the sound card i just done a search on google about the
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro and it turns out that it has some major issues with BF2 and lots of other games so what would be the next best thing?

If you want to spend that much on the sound card, try the fatal1ty version, if not get the x-fi extreme music. I have the extreme music and i love it. Gonna get some new speakers for it soon :D
