My friend has a MOBO that only support up to 4x, and he is thinking about getting the 9600XT card which uses 8x. Is there anyway to get around that? Thanks alot

No,not untill the game needs it,does yours ?
Don't waste your money, till you can't meet software requirements.

The ATI video cards are backward compatible. Like microbell said, you can use it in your MOBO, but at 4X only.

In your BIOS you should be able to select the speed at which the video card runs, 2x, 4x, and/or 8x.

If you select 4x it will work, your motherboard might also have an option for auto.

how much worse is the card running at 4x compared with it running on a 8x agp slot?

Right now there isn't much of a difference at all. I don't think that you'll be able to tell a difference until these next gen cards come out later on this year. But the current cards don't really take advantage of it.
