converting video

i have a video on a cd-r, and i want to convert it from the original file size (600 MB) to a size suitable for a website (300 MB). Is there a way to make it smaller in size by changing formats or quality? I find that AVI format is really good quality and low file size.

the original file format is mpg. i dont know the codec...

an update:

the movie's file format is QuickTime

I converted it to AVI using 3GP Video Converter. Its now half the size. No more help needed, thanks anyways.
