Well, it depends on what you are playing. The 4200 is a dx8.1 while the 9600 is dx9.0, so the 9600 will play the newest games with all the bells and whistles. For DX8.1 games, the 9600 is a little faster in some games and slower in others, like Q3 Arena. If you can get the 9600, go for it. The ability to play DX9.0 games of the future are well worth any price increase. The 4200 will be obsolete any day now, as all the new games are DX9.0 now.

ur comparing 9600 to geforce4.....geforce4 is older than radeon 9600......geforceFX 5200 or 5600 is like the radeon 9600........in my opinion NVIDIA CARDS have blazing speeds with OPENGL and 32bit color/textring....plus they have slightly better image quality....on the negative side....ati's cards have better compatibilty..and slightly better DirectX speed and is less CPU reliant than NVIDIA cards....these are just my opinions...other ppl's opinions may differ

Yes, GeForce4 and Radeon 9600 aren't in the same generation. If the driver situation was the same as early last year, then the GeForce4 Ti 4200 would have easily outperformed the Radeon 9600 Pro, but it quickly turned around.
