pci express graphics cards

i've never seen anything for pci-e x1 or x8... what goes in those anyway??? my instruction manual says something weird...

I know sometimes there are 16X slots that run at 8X (usually happens if you SLI 2 Nvidia cards) but I haven't heard of a slot specifically designed for 8X
