I have a nagging problem on a PC I'm trying to put together for my sister's little girls. It is an 800 MHZ Duron, 256MB RAM, Windows XP Pro, 300 Watt PS (New).

No problems with previous owner (my fiancee's sister). All I've done with it in my possession is uninstall programs, defrag, cleanup, etc.

I am noticing now that intermittently, after completing POST, when it would ordinarily go to the WIN XP black screen (saying "loading..."), it just goes black and the computer seems locked up.

Sometimes, after resetting at this point, it won't even finish loading drivers for Safe Mode before freezing.

Is this a problem with the boot sector on the hard drive? Even though it only does this half the time? Or something else? If it makes it as far as where the black WIN XP loading screen comes up before freezing, that points to the hard drive usually right?

Appreciate any help or comments. Thanks to all, and I hope everyone had a happy new year...
