I have got 2 hard drives in my computer, C: is my main HD and D: is where all my Music, Videos, and other downloads are kept. Anyway I reformatted drive C: and installed XP on it. when I got into Windows my D: drive is there but it won't open, I get the message -

The Disk in drive D is not formatted.
Do you want to format it now?

What the **** has happened, I have 120Gb worth of very important files on it including my Coursework. Does anyone know how I can access it as I really can't afford to lose all that data??

Okay. The drives before you installed windows xp were on what system 98se? If that is the case the d: drive is still formated in FAT32 and simply needs to be converted to NTFS. Relax....your okay!
Converting to NTFS Using Convert.exe
A partition can also be converted after Setup by using Convert.exe. For more information about Convert.exe, after completing Setup, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. In the command window, type help convert, and then press ENTER.

It is easy to convert partitions to NTFS. The Setup program makes conversion easy, whether your partitions used FAT, FAT32, or the older version of NTFS. This kind of conversion keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition.

To find out more information about Convert.exe
1.
After completing Setup, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

2.
In the command window, type help convert and then press ENTER. Information about converting FAT volumes to NTFS is made available as shown below.

Converting FAT volumes to NTFS

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
1.
Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

2.
In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.

Important Once you convert a drive or partition to NTFS, you cannot simply convert it back to FAT or FAT32. You will need to reformat the drive or partition which will erase all data, including programs and personal files, on the partition.

Thanks for the quick detailed reply. i'll give a try tomorrow and let you know what happens. It things like this that makes me hate computers, I've built up so much information over time and it just disapears in a second :(

Oh I didnt have Win 98 before, I had XP Pro, I just wanted to do a clean install again.

Well I tried everything and had no luck. The drive was coming up as RAW so it wasn't even formatted apparently. Pretty gutted, but I guess I will learn from my own mistakes in the future and back-up my work :(

Thanks for your help Rico, I'm sure it took a bit to write that out for me.

Now.......go here and recover your lost data......it is still there!!!!!

http://www.runtime.org/

Like I said, that data is still there. I did the same thing 6 months ago and formated over my D: drive. The above program retored all my files and put them back in the original folders!!!!

You my friend are a genius :) I managed to get back near enough all of my lost files by using that magnificent program. Some of the files recovered are invalid but hey I got the majority back so I aint complaining. Only problem for is all of my folders it recovered (about 100) are named [0012A] etc so its gonna take me a while to rename em all :(

Oh well i aint bothered cause I got them back, no thanks to you mate. Once again thanks alot for your help during my stressing out period lol.
