If it is a 40 gig it shold be a WD400 somethingorother.

Now we're talkin'!!!! I have read that that drive may misreport drive size to XP if set on cable select. Jumper it as either the mater or slave.

this HDD has been jumpered as master......

Run defrag in xp and it should tell you if there are a significant number of sectors that are marked as bad. You can also run chkdsk from the "dos" prompt in CMD (from Run) and see if you get sector errors as well. Also, go to the WD web site and download their latest HD software and run their HD diagnostic.
