I just built a new PC for a family member, and I put 512 MB of RAM. It has 2 x 256MB DDR400 RAM, but for some reason, the PC recognizes it as only 256 instead of 512. What's happening here? (Mobo supports 2GB of RAM)

Sys. Specs-
Biostar K8HNA Grand Socket 754 (mobo)
AMD 2800+ (cpu)
2 x 256MB PC3200 (ram)
XGi Volari V8 (vc0
WD 80GB SATA 1.5Mb/s (hdd)

Are there 3 slots?

It only has 2 slots.

The simpliest reason is normally the right answer. I'm going to say, "Reseat the modules and make sure that the white clamps are locked inplace on the modules."

A more difficult answer would be try (one module) in each dimm slot, rotating to see if you have boot issues. This will let you know if you have a bad dimm slot or a bad module.
