To Introduce myself, I'm 14 and fairly acquainted w/ computers. I'm definitely better at software, and never built before but i'll have assistance so i'm confident w/ building. I have a 1000 budget and i thought this was high enough for high performance, especially since its for gaming.
I have my hd, case (atx),powersupply and combo drive laid out. id like to keep the mobo combo under 800. i have a p4 setup and an amd setup so far, here goes:

Asus P5ND2-SLI Socket 775 (ATX)
Intel P4 519 3.06ghz 800mhz fsb
Mushkin GreenLine Dual Channel 1gbDDR pc3200 400mhz
2 Diablotek GeForce 6600 512MB ddr2 PCI Express (sli)

Asus A8N-SLI NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ socket 939 2000mhz fsb
Mushkin GreenLine Dual Channel 1gbDDR pc3200 400mhz
2 XFX GeForce 6600GT 128mb ddr3 pci express (sli)

i could use
XFX GeForce 6600GT 128mb ddr3 pci express (sli)
2 Diablotek GeForce 6600 512MB ddr2 PCI Express (sli)
on either for the same price, which would be better w/ sli?

Get 1 good video card do not get two and sli them. A 7800GT is nice you have been mislead by choosing a 6600 512 Meg it's crap.

Choose a AMD over an Intel. Do you want single or duel core?

ASUS is a great board DFI is also a great board. Most will direct you to DFI but I can tell you ASUS will not let you down in any aspect.

i understand, but why no sli?

edit: eVGA GeForce 7800 GT / 256MB GDDR3
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Clawhammer 2ghz fsb, 1mb cache

good setup?

SLI offers poor performance improvement for the money. Search TF and you will find why.

EDIT Just saw your edit and that would be a good setup, if you cant go with the 3700+ san diego core. It oc's better and runs cooler.

i read that post, i didn't know if two would be better or worse than one better one with the price of two. thanks. ahem, i think im gonna go with this since its not completley for graphics:
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego Core 1mb cache 2ghz fsb
eVGA GeForce 6600 GT 256MB DDR3

final:
Asus A8N-SLI NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2ghz/1mb
Mushkin Green Line 2gb (ddr pc3200
Maxtor 250gb 7.2k RPM UATA 133
NEC 16x DVD+RW
Ultra FLoppy Drive/ 6in 1 Card Reader
eVGA Geforce 7800 GT 256MB DDR3
Silencer 470 ATX PSU
Aspire Explorer
